BSD’s School and Family Consultation goal is to meet the needs of deaf and hearing students with communication delays throughout northeastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire by providing specialists to collaborate with school personnel and families to ensure best practices for the education of these students. Mainstreamed deaf and hearing students with communication delays many times need specialized support in their home schools. A certified Teacher of the Deaf, special needs teacher, or psychologist specializing in deafness can provide the expertise and assistance to classroom teachers and school administrators. Services include:
Family Consulting BSD provides individualized consulting for families of children newly diagnosed with hearing loss and/or communication challenges. Families may decide to incorporate additional communication therapies into their child's day. BSD can arrange for private, hourly language therapy in your home. This privately paid service would be beyond those listed on the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Psychological Assessment Deaf and hard of hearing students require the services of a psychologist with expertise in deafness including American Sign Language, Deaf culture, technological innovations, current research, and resources for families and educational professionals. In addition to psychological evaluations, services that are offered include: consultation, prevention, intervention, social-emotional, and academic evaluations.

Deaf Culture and Awareness Training This presentation will teach some basic signs, tips for communicating with a deaf person, and how to use an interpreter. Communication modes will be discussed (such as the difference between ASL, SEE II, and PSE). Included topics are strategies, support and devices that assist deaf individuals, including cochlear implants, hearing aids, auditory trainers, TTYs, Deaf Relay, new technology, and hearing dogs. Presentations are available to educators, audiologists, child care centers, hospitals, corporations, and government agencies and can be flexible to meet the needs or your particular interest.
