BSD Staff Expertise
Beverly School for the Deaf (BSD) faculty and staff are highly skilled, certified, and caring professionals. Faculty and support staff include:

Certified Teachers of the Deaf
Teachers of the Deaf are responsible for planning and carrying out a curriculum that focuses on the individual needs and IEP of each student and follows the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, as appropriate for the ability level of each child. Teachers adapt and develop materials to match the unique needs and communication challenges of each student to ensure that all students reach their learning potential.

Paraprofessionals
Paras assist the classroom teacher with curriculum planning, supervision, and teaching.  They assist in presenting and reinforcing learning concepts, while assisting with classroom and behavior management in a proactive manner.

One-on-One Staff  Based on an individual student’s unique needs and when required by a student’s IEP, one-on-one staff accompany an individual student at all times, providing necessary assistance so that the student can participate in all school activities.

ASL Specialist
Our ASL specialist works with Deaf students one-on-one or in a small group to assist Deaf students in developing ASL proficiency.

ASL Interpreter
An ASL interpreter is available daily to provide interpreter services for Deaf students and staff. When further interpreting services are needed, BSD hires certified interpreters on an as-needed basis.

BSD Staff Training
Ongoing professional development related to Deaf education is an integral part of BSD’s weekly schedule. All staff in the BSD program participate in American Sign Language/English/Bilingual Professional Development (AEBPD), an intensive four-level training program sponsored by Gallaudet College.
In addition BSD provides weekly ASL classes for all staff.  The Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing assess staff ASL fluency using the Signed Conversational Proficiency Interview (SCPI).  BSD staff also participate in off-site workshops and conferences which enhance their skills in working with Deaf/HH children.

In addition to the staff described above, the following professionals support the needs of students at BSD.

  • Occupational Therapist
  •  Physical Therapist
