Recognizing the family as the most critical educational component in a young child’s life, Beverly School for the Deaf offers family support and education through its Early Childhood Programs.



Our Students
Beverly School for the Deaf serves students who are Deaf, Deaf with cochlear implants, hard-of-hearing, hearing, non-verbal and those with speech and language delays.  Students may also have physical challenges, cognitive/global delays, or learning disabilities.  Beverly School for the Deaf will make every effort to accommodate all students who present with specialized language, communication or developmental learning issues.

What’s Great About Beverly School for the Deaf Early Childhood Programs?
We recognize diversity in our students and families and adapt the communication strategies for our youngest students accordingly.  Our teachers might use:

  • Picture communication

  • Electronic augmentative communication systems

  • Our faculty includes a SKI-HI Parent Advisor.  SKI-HI is a nationally recognized Early Intervention Program for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children and their families.

  • We work in conjunction with Early Intervention Centers so most times our programs are free to EI families.

  • Our programs are convenient.  Either teachers make home visits or our play groups are held at our accessible campus.

  • This is our specialty. Our staff has the education and experience to make a difference in the communication ability of a young child.


     



Beverly School for the Deaf’s Parent-Infant/Toddler Program is open to babies and infants struggling with communication development.  Our program educators specialize in supporting deaf, hard-of hearing, and children with significant communication delays.
  • Parent-Infant/Toddler Teachers visit families in their homes where young children are most comfortable.

  • This Program is contracted through the Department of Public Health (DPH) Early Intervention (EI) Centers.

  • Beverly School for the Deaf educators work in conjunction with EI professionals to better meet the family’s needs.

  • Families enrolled in EI Programs receive this service free.

  • Families not eligible for EI Services may also private pay for this developmental service.

Babies have a lot to say – they just don’t know how to say it yet! Research has proven that infants, typically developing or not, who learn to communicate using sign may have a better command of spoken language as they develop. And best of all, babies using sign exhibit fewer negative behaviors because they can tell you what they want.

Beverly School for the Deaf trained faculty provides a fun, developmentally appropriate class that will teach moms and dads how to implement this easy tool in their home. The class lasts only one hour and is supported by take-home CD/DVD materials for home use. Classes are held one morning per week at Beverly School for the Deaf and run for 10 weeks.

Beverly School for the Deaf’s “See It, Sign It, Do It” Playgroup is for Early Intervention toddlers and community peers. Activities such as story time, play time and circle time are presented in speech and sign language to promote language development and early social and play skills.

Play Groups are run by Beverly School for the Deaf staff with some coordination from area Early Intervention Programs.

Caregivers participate with their toddlers and have the opportunity to watch staff model techniques for promoting language development, to have their questions and concerns addressed and to interact with other parents.
